About the Artist...
Art without pretense.
Hello.  I'm Debra McCann.  I am an artist.
If you have been viewing the galleries, it is obvious I am a
Nascar and country music fan.
I didn't attend any formal art school and I don't have any
fancy awards, degrees or gallery showings, but I don't
believe those things validate your worth as an artist.  Your
work should speak for itself.  I believe mine does.

I've always had a pencil or brush in my hand.  As a child, I
drew my own paper dolls and comic books.  After high
school graduation, I spent the summer teaching myself to
draw, really draw.  I filled up sketch book upon sketch book.
Then, as often happens, reality interceded, and I put my art
on the back burner to take a real  job and earn a living.
Years went by.  Then, on a whim, I signed up for a
watercolor workshop.  After 3 days, the fire was relit.   I
learned so many things in those three days, then promptly, I
ignored them all and developed my own technique.
Today, my walls are filled with my paintings and drawings,
but I'm the only one who enjoys them.  I think that is sad.
Hours, months, years of work that no one sees but me.

A few years ago, a co-worker commissioned, for her
mentally challenged niece, a small portrait of her favorite
country singer as a birthday present.  When the young lady
saw the portrait, she burst into tears.  It brought her so
much joy.  And that's really what art is all about.

                        Thanks for listening,
